Ίος - my summer 2017

Those are the coordinates of the island Ios, engraved on a tiny plaque I wear around my neck every summer. No, I’m not a Niotissa myself (that is to say, a native of Nios, as locals tend to call their island); yet, Ios is so close to my heart that, much like a kid, I count down the days every winter until I return there.
My love for Nios began back in ’99, when I set foot on the island for the first time, with the unenthusiastic insights offered by friends still ringing in my ears: “Seriously, you couldn’t have chosen a more haphazard place than that. You will hardly bear it after a couple of days.” Well, Ios surely proved them all wrong, as I had one of the best holidays of my life.
As the years went by, Ios lingered as a sweet memory until I returned in ’09 to recover from a serious accident and a romantic disappointment. Having lots to think about and even more to leave behind, Ios all of a sudden seemed like the perfect place for a proper restart. At first, of course, I was a bit skeptical as to what the island might have turned into after 10 years of wild parties and the “barbarian” hordes of tourists, but I soon felt the way I did all those years before: free, untroubled, calm.
Now you might say “How can you feel calm on the ultimate party island?”
Ios is indeed a party island; but it is much more than that. In fact, that label does the island a grave injustice. You see, if you manage to put aside all the wild partying and the tourism deemed unwelcome by all the other islands, Ios has a whole different face to show.
Situated among Sikinos, Irakleia, Paros, and Santorini in the Cycladic cluster, civilization had flourished on the island as far back as the Early Cycladic period around 2800 BC.
The archaeological site of Skarkos, as well as the archaeological museum housed within the Amoiradakeio Mansion along with the Town Hall in the central square of Chora, provide valuable information on the ways Nios, ideally located north of Minoan Crete and next to Santorini, significantly contributed to the birth and development of ancient civilization across Greece and Europe.
Ios also takes pride in its magnificent “Odysseas Elytis” theater, designed by the German architect Peter Haupt, an ardent lover of Greece and Ios in particular, as well as in the museum dedicated to the renowned Greek artist Yiannis Gaitis, not to mention that it is a strong contender as the final resting place of the ancient poet Homer (as evidenced by the tomb situated in the northern part of the island).
Without question, Ios offers so much quality, variety, stunning scenery, and diversity that there is always something new to discover on every visit.
When planning your vacation in Nios, start with the basics.
Where to stay: Ios provides excellent accommodation choices for all budgets. The –famous for its parties– Far Out Camping and its younger “sibling”, the boutique hotel Liostasi; the family-friendly Petra Holiday Village in Ios port; the widely known Ios Palace with its exquisite view; and my personal favorite, Island House in Mylopotas, where Dimitra and her family make me feel at home while on holiday... the options are countless depending on the kind of vacation you have in mind.
The natural beauty of the island is unparalleled. Not one, nor two, but 35 beaches promise to satisfy all tastes and likings: from the popular among youngsters Mylopotas, with its abundance of great beach bars, and Manganari, famous for the scenes from “The Big Blue” that were filmed there, to Kalamos, where you can enjoy swimming all by yourself on 15 August.
And the surprises keep coming. As many as 365 churches, one for every day of the year, adorn my cherished island, my favorite among them being Agia Irini, the one that oversees the port. Every year upon my departure I post the same photo along with a wish to meet again. A walk from Chora to Agia Irini is certainly not to be missed.
The most spectacular sunset is also enjoyed from where one of the churches is situated.
Wander around Chora, which remains unspoiled by the passing of time with its marble-white, winding lanes –called stigadia by locals–, the rounded arches, and the brilliantly white houses with their enclosed gardens lush with flowers; you will inevitably end up at Panagia Gremiotissa, a church built on the highest peak of Chora in 1797 AD. From this point, the view across the Aegean Sea is simply breathtaking.
Every year on 15 August, local children will welcome you to the island by offering you cold water and traditional loukoumi sweets before the procession of the icon of Holy Mary, celebrated on this day, begins. It is a scene impossible to capture on Instagram, yet one that stays with me all winter long.
If climbing up steep lanes is not quite your thing, you can still marvel at glorious sunsets while enjoying fine music and award-winning cocktails at Ios Club; its lovely owner, Christie, is the perfect hostess. “Casta Diva” sung by Callas, the sun sinking into the sea... pure magic.
Start your day in Ios with breakfast at Cantina Del Mar in Mylopotas with its excellent coffee and wide array of choices, or at Buongiorno Bakery in Ios port. Then, head to one of the gorgeous sandy beaches for a swim. To visit those that are inaccessible by car, all you have to do is board the “Ziguala” boat for a truly exotic experience, as said beaches are all but deserted even in August.
And now on to the next burning issue: food. Back in ’99, street food such as souvlaki of questionable quality was all you could find in Ios; decent food choices were hopelessly limited. You see, back then tourists were more interested in drinking rather than eating.
Things have changed dramatically in recent years, and the alternatives now offered are numerous and remarkable. Treat yourself to fish at Drakos tavern in Mylopotas; home-cooked moussaka at Vilaeti in Epano Kampos; tidbits and a genuinely friendly atmosphere at Katogi; ethnic dishes at Lord Byron where lively Karima teases the customers; tsimetia (stuffed zucchini flowers) at Polydorοs in Koumpara; and ouzo at The Octopus Tree down at the port.
Ios offers several amazing local products. Do not leave before tasting pasteli, a sweet bar made of thyme honey and sesame; skotyri, a soft goat cheese scented with herbs; the locally-produced, hard sklirotyri cheese; mosenta, Ios’ watermelon pie; and thyme honey.
Nights in Nios are exceptional in that, depending on your mood, you can roam around the hundreds of bars and party till dawn drinking shots along with the foreigners at Slammer Bar or singing karaoke, get acquainted with traditional rebetiko music in Kato Plateia while drinking raki with the locals, lounge on the stone benches at Valsamo Bar listening to Harry’s jazz and swing selections, socialize at George’s Click Cocktail Bar, watch the sunrise after a night of dancing wildly at the Irish Bar, or head down to the port and sip your drink at Yialou beach bar with the waves lapping at your feet.
August is just around the corner and I’m already counting down the days. The island is waiting bathed in light... an island of eternal youth, carefreeness, positivity, simplicity, relaxation, optimism, and gentleness... the Nios that speaks to my heart.

Είναι οι συντεταγμένες της Ίου οι οποίες είναι χαραγμένες σε μια πλακέτα που φοράω κάθε καλοκαίρι στο λαιμό μου. Όχι δεν είμαι Νιώτισσα (Νιο λένε οι ντόπιοι το νησί) αλλά η Ίος είναι για εμένα το νησί της καρδιάς μου και κάθε χειμώνα μετράω σαν πιτσιρίκι τις ημέρες αντίστροφα για να βρεθώ εκεί. Ο έρωτας με τη Νιο άρχισε το ’99, όταν βρέθηκα για πρώτη φορά στο νησί και όλοι πριν πάω μου έλεγαν: μα καλά, πιο χύμα μέρoς δεν μπορούσες να διαλέξεις; Πάνω από δυο ημέρες δεν πρόκειται να αντέξεις. Ε, λοιπόν, το νησί τούς διέψευσε αφού ήταν από τις καλύτερες διακοπές της ζωής μου. Τα χρόνια πέρασαν, η Ίος έμεινε μια γλυκιά ανάμνηση και ξαναγύρισα στο νησί το ’09 για να συνέλθω από ένα σοβαρό ατύχημα και μια ερωτική απογοήτευση. Είχα πολλά να σκεφτώ και ακόμα περισσότερα να αφήσω πίσω, οπότε η Ίος φάνταζε ξαφνικά σαν το ιδανικό μέρος για να κάνω restart. Στην αρχή βέβαια ήμουν επιφυλακτική για το πώς θα είχε γίνει το νησί μετά από 10 χρόνια γεμάτα parties και ορδές βαρβάρων, αλλά γρήγορα ένιωσα αυτό που είχα νιώσει τόσα χρόνια πριν. Ελευθερία, ανεμελιά, ηρεμία. Εδώ θα μου πείτε, πώς νιώθεις ηρεμία στο απόλυτο party island; Η Ίος είναι και party island. Αλλά δεν είναι μόνο αυτό. Και αυτός ο χαρακτηρισμός την αδικεί κατάφορα. Γιατί αν μπορέσεις να βάλεις στην άκρη τα ξέφρενα party και τον τουρισμό που κανένα άλλο νησί δεν θέλει, η Ίος έχει και άλλο πρόσωπο. Είναι το κυκλαδονήσι ανάμεσα στη Σίκινο, την Ηρακλειά, την Πάρο και τη Σαντορίνη, με πολιτισμό που άνθισε στο νησί ήδη από τα πρωτοκυκλαδίτικα χρόνια περίπου το 2800 π.Χ. Ο αρχαιολογικός χώρος του Σκάρου μαζί με το αρχαιολογικό μουσείο της Χώρας που στεγάζεται στο Αμοιραδάκειο Μέγαρο στην κεντρική πλατεία της Χώρας μαζί με το Δημαρχείο, δίνουν πολύτιμες πληροφορίες γιατί η Νιος, βόρεια της Μινωικής Κρήτης και δίπλα στη Σαντορίνη, έπαιξε πρωταρχικό ρόλο στη δημιουργία κι εξάπλωση του αρχαίου πολιτισμού στην Ελλάδα και την Ευρώπη. Η Ίος επίσης καμαρώνει για το υπέροχο θέατρο «Οδυσσέας Ελύτης», που σχεδίασε ο φιλέλληνας και λάτρης του νησιού Γερμανός αρχιτέκτονας Peter Haupt, για το μουσείο του γνωστού Έλληνα εικαστικού Γαΐτη και διεκδικεί και τα σκήπτρα ταφής του Ομήρου (υπάρχει τύμβος στο βόρειο κομμάτι του νησιού). Ένα νησί που έχει ποιότητα, επιλογές, απίστευτη φυσική ομορφιά, εναλλαγές και κάθε φορά που θα το επισκέπτεσαι θα ανακαλύπτεις και κάτι καινούργιο. Σχεδιάζοντας διακοπές στη Νιο, ξεκινά κανείς από τα βασικά. Πού θα μείνω: Η Ίος έχει εξαιρετικά καταλύματα για κάθε είδους budget. Από –το ιστορικό για τα party του– Camping Far Out που τα τελευταία χρόνια απέκτησε και αδερφάκι ξενοδοχείο, το εστέτ Liostasi, το οικογενειακό Petra Holiday Village στον Γιαλό, το πλέον γνωστό Ios Palace με την τέλεια θέα και το αγαπημένο μου Island House στον Μυλοπότα όπου η Δήμητρα με την οικογένειά της με κάνουν να νιώθω σαν να κάνω διακοπές στο σπίτι μου, οι επιλογές είναι πολλές ανάλογα με το είδος διακοπών που θέλετε να κάνετε. Η ομορφιά που αντικρίζει κανείς μοναδική. Εδώ οι παραλίες είναι όχι μια και δυο αλλά 35, παρακαλώ, και για όλα τα γούστα. Από τον εφηβικό Μυλοπότα με πολλά και καλά beach bars και το διάσημο –για τις σκηνές από την ταινία «Απέραντο Γαλάζιο» – Μαγγανάρι μέχρι τον Κάλαμο, που κάνεις μόνος σου μπάνιο τον 15Αύγουστο. Και οι εκπλήξεις συνεχίζονται. 365 εκκλησίες, μία για κάθε μέρα του χρόνου έχει το νησάκι μου και η Αγία Ειρήνη που δεσπόζει στο λιμάνι είναι η αγαπημένη μου, αφού κάθε χρόνο όταν φεύγω από το νησί ανεβάζω την ίδια φωτογραφία με μια ευχή για καλή αντάμωση. H βόλτα από τη Χώρα στην Αγ. Ειρήνη είναι must. Το καλύτερο ηλιοβασίλεμα πάλι από εκκλησία το βλέπεις. Περιπλανήσου στη Χώρα, που παραμένει αναλλοίωτη στο πέρασμα του χρόνου με τα κάτασπρα φιδωτά δρομάκια –τα στιγάδια, όπως τα ονομάζουν οι ντόπιοι–, τις τοξωτές καμάρες και τα εκτυφλωτικά κάτασπρα σπίτια με τις γεμάτες λουλούδια εσωτερικές αυλές και ο δρόμος θα σε βγάλει στην Παναγία Γκρεμιώτισσα που βρίσκεται στο ψηλότερο σημείο της Χώρας και χτίστηκε το 1797 μ.Χ. Η θέα προς το Αιγαίο από εδώ κόβει την ανάσα. Κάθε 15 Αυγούστου στην είσοδό της σε υποδέχονται Νιωτάκια που σου προσφέρουν κρύο νερό και λουκούμι για το καλωσόρισμα πριν αρχίσει η περιφορά της εικόνας της Παναγίας. Εικόνα που δεν αποτυπώνεται στο Instagram αλλά με συντροφεύει έναν ολόκληρο χειμώνα. Και αν δεν είστε της… ανηφόρας μαγικό ηλιοβασίλεμα με τέλειες μουσικές και βραβευμένα cocktails απολαμβάνει κανείς και στο Ιos Club με τη γλυκιά Κρίστη τέλεια οικοδέσποινα. Το Casta Diva με την Callas και ο ήλιος να χάνεται στη θάλασσα… μαγεία. Η μέρα στην Ίο αρχίζει με πρωινό στην Cantina Del Mar στον Μυλοπότα με τέλειο καφέ και προτάσεις για όλους ή στο φούρνο Buongiorno στον Γιαλό. Συνεχίζει με μπάνιο σε κάποια από τις πανέμορφες αμμουδερές παραλίες και όσοι θέλουν να δουν και αυτές που δεν μπορείς να πας με αυτοκίνητο δεν έχουν παρά να βρουν το καϊκάκι Ζιγκουάλα για μια εμπειρία πραγματικά εξωτική, αφού οι παραλίες αυτές ακόμα και τον Αύγουστο είναι σχεδόν έρημες. Και τώρα ερχόμαστε στο κεφάλαιο φαγητό. Το ’99 η Ιος ήταν γεμάτη από αμφίβολης ποιότητας σουβλάκια και ελάχιστες επιλογές για καλό φαγητό. Βλέπετε ο τότε τουρισμός της ενδιαφερόταν περισσότερο για να πιει, όχι να φάει… Τα τελευταία χρόνια τα πράγματα έχουν αλλάξει άρδην και οι επιλογές είναι πολλές και καλές. Ψάρι οπωσδήποτε στον Δράκο στον Μυλοπότα, μουσακά μαμαδίσιο στο Βηλαέτι στον Επάνω Κάμπο, μεζέδες και τέλεια παρεΐστικη ατμόσφαιρα στο Κατώγι, πιο έθνικ προτάσεις στον Λόρδο Βύρωνα με τη φασαριόζα Καρίμα να πειράζει τους πελάτες, τσιμέτια (γεμιστοί κολοκυθοανθοί) στον Πολύδωρα στην Κουμπάρα και ουζάκια στο Octapus Tree στο λιμάνι. Η Ίος έχει καταπληκτικά ντόπια προϊόντα οπότε μην ξεχάσετε να δοκιμάσετε: Παστέλι με ντόπιο θυμαρίσιο μέλι και σουσάμι/ Σκωτήρι – μαλακό κατσικίσιο τυρί με μυρωδικά/ Νιώτικο σκληροτύρι/ Μοσέντα – η ντόπια Καρπουζόπιτα/ και θυμαρίσιο μέλι. Οι βραδιές στη Νιο είναι διαφορετικές, αφού ανάλογα με το κέφι σου μπορείς να περιπλανηθείς στα εκατοντάδες bars και να partaρεις με τα «ξενάκια» μέχρι το πρωί πίνοντας σφηνάκια στο Slammer Bar ή κάνοντας καραόκε, να ακούσεις ρεμπέτικα στην Κάτω Πλατεία πίνοντας ρακές με τους ντόπιους, να καθίσεις στα πεζούλια στο Βάλσαμο ακούγοντας jazz και swing επιλογές από τον Χάρη, να γνωρίσεις κόσμο στο Klik του Γιώργου, να δεις την ανατολή μετά από τρελό χορό στο Irish Bar ή να κατέβεις στον Γιαλό και να πιεις το ποτό σου κυριολεκτικά πάνω στο κύμα στο Yialou. Ο Αύγουστος είναι προ των πυλών και μετράω ανάποδα. Το νησί είναι εκεί λουσμένο στο φως. Το νησί της αέναης νιότης, της ανεμελιάς, της θετικής ενέργειας, της απλότητας, της χαλάρωσης, της αισιοδοξίας και της γλυκύτητας.
